Ratne, a small town in the marshes of Volhynian Polesia, lived apart from roads and railways. The war between Poland and Soviet Russia nonetheless brought armed detachments there. The Jewish homes of the town were looted, their inhabitants beaten and stripped of their belongings. As throughout Polesia, the absence of authority left the community without recourse.
