the Jews of the station and town attacked by troops in transit
Vapniarka was above all a railway station, a hub on the line connecting Podolia to Odessa, and a small town had grown up around it. Throughout the civil war, railway stations were the most dangerous places for Jews: troops in transit would descend from the trains, seek out Jewish travelers and the town's inhabitants, strip them of their belongings and beat them on the platforms themselves. At Vapniarka as elsewhere, the station was the scene of repeated abuses at the mercy of passing convoys.
