Along the Dnieper, cities passed alternately under Red, White, Ukrainian, or independent warlord control. For the Jewish communities, this was not a succession of regimes but a succession of aggressors. It was under these conditions that the first armed self-defense units were formed, which would join the Red Army for lack of any other available protection.
