On the fifteenth day of February, the Cossacks of ataman Semossenko entered the Jewish quarter of Proskourov on written orders, and put it to the sword for four hours. The order specified the use of cold steel, so as not to alert the city with the sound of gunfire.
Proskourov is the deadliest pogrom of the Ukrainian civil war, and the most thoroughly documented: the order exists, the timeline is established, the perpetrators are named. It is this documentation that would make it the central case in the Paris trial, a few years later, when Sholom Schwartzbard shot Petlioura and was acquitted by a French jury in light of the archival items produced on the pogroms.
