Oleksandrivsk, at the foot of the Dniepr rapids, was a rapidly growing industrial city where the Jewish community held an important place in trade and crafts. It found itself at the heart of the fighting between White armies, Red armies, and insurgent detachments in the lower valley. The Jews of the city were plundered, beaten, and several were massacred during the successive changes of power.
