the Jewish houses of the town plundered, its inhabitants ransomed
Kostopil, a market town in forested Volhynia, lived off timber and the trade that flowed from it, and its Jewish population ran sawmills and warehouses there. The civil war brought rival detachments competing for control of the province. Jewish homes were looted, stocks carried off, and the community held to ransom. Stripped of their possessions, the inhabitants watched their trade destroyed at the very moment the region was changing hands for the third time.
