In the month of September, the White troops of Dénikine subjected Fastov to a week of pillaging. Inhabitants were burned in their homes.
The White Army had styled itself the army of order and of a united Russia, and it enjoyed the support of the Western powers. Its pogroms were among the deadliest of the civil war, and they weighed heavily on the attitude of the Jewish populations: between an army that massacred them in the name of order and one that tolerated them, the choice made itself, with all the consequences this would have for their image in Eastern Europe.
