Jewish quarters ransacked, inhabitants massacred in courtyards

Grigoriev's bands sack the Jewish quarters of Elisavetgrad in May, massacring the inhabitants in the courtyards of buildings.

The city had given its name to the first pogrom of the previous generation's wave. It now witnesses one of the deadliest of the civil war. This return to the same place four decades apart is no accident of chronicle: it is a city where the Jewish population was large, authority weak, and precedent established.
