the Jewish town of the marshes sacked by armed bands

Doubrovytsia, a small town in Volhynian Polesia, stood amid marshes and forests, in a region no army truly controlled. The armed bands that held sway there sacked the Jewish quarter, carrying off everything that could be moved. The inhabitants were beaten, some killed. The isolation of Polesia, which had long protected its communities, this time left them without recourse against those who held the roads.
