Pogrom of the October Manifesto
octobre 1905·Ekaterinoslav
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Jewish quarter attacked, Jewish self-defense overwhelmed
The Jewish quarter of Ekaterinoslav was attacked during the same wave, and the Jewish self-defense there was overwhelmed.
These self-defense groups were born of the preceding wave and of the Kichinev pogrom: young men organized by the Jewish socialist and Zionist parties, armed with whatever they could find. They change something in the image the community holds of itself, without changing much in the balance of forces — a neighborhood militia cannot stand against rioters shielded by the troops.
