Jewish quarter sacked, the community ruined

In July, the Jewish quarter of Pereïaslav is ransacked and the community ruined.

The wave has by then left the major cities for the small towns, where it will cause the most lasting damage. A shtetl community lives by retail trade and craftsmanship; when the shop and the workshop are destroyed on the same day, there is nothing left to hold on to, and it is from these small towns that the bulk of emigration toward the West will depart.
