the ghetto sacked during the uprising against French occupation

The Veronese uprising against the French garrison, known as the Pasque Veronesi because it began on Easter Monday, lasted several days and ended with the recapture of the city. During the unrest, the ghetto was invaded and looted: the Jews were believed to have welcomed the French, who had ordered the gates of the ghetto torn down and proclaimed civil equality. This reproach followed the route of the revolutionary armies everywhere in Italy: wherever the ghetto had been opened, its reopening was laid at the feet of the Jews, and the return of the old order was paid for at their expense. Verona was the first such example, and Tuscany, two years later, the bloodiest.
