the Jews handed over by the Polish garrison after the surrender of the castle
At Tulchin, the Polish garrison and the Jews sheltering in the castle had bound themselves by oath to defend it together. After the surrender, the Poles handed the Jews over to the Cossacks in exchange for their own lives; they were massacred a few days later in their turn.
The episode left a lasting mark on the Jewish Memory of Poland: it showed that noble protection, which was the foundation of the Jewish condition in the Republic, could be broken in an instant. The Jewish chroniclers of the time all return to it.
