Massacres of Khmelnytsky
10 juin 1648·Nemirov
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the Cossacks enter the city under Polish banners and massacre the community sheltering in the fortress
The Cossacks of Khmelnytsky presented themselves before Nemirov under Polish banners: the Jews who had taken refuge in the fortress, believing that relief forces had arrived, opened the gates. They were massacred.
Nemirov became the symbol of the uprising. Rabbi Yom-Tov Lipmann Heller established the fast of the twentieth of the month of Sivan, the day of the massacre, in memory of the victims of the entire revolt; it was observed by Polish Jewry until the twentieth century. It is from these years that the chronicles of Nathan Hanover date, which brought knowledge of the disaster to the entire diaspora.
