Polonnoe was taken and its community massacred along with the refugees who had crowded into it. The chronicles of the time give a considerable figure, which historians today consider far in excess of reality.
The Khmelnytsky uprising was first and foremost a revolt of Ukrainian peasants and Cossacks against the Polish nobility and the Uniate Church. The Jews, who managed the estates on behalf of the lords, collected their dues, and ran the inns, were the visible and reachable part of this system. They were struck first and most harshly.
