The community of Pohrebyshche was destroyed during the Cossack raids.
Towns of this kind, known as shtetl, had grown out of the Jewish settlement of Polish Ukraine in the preceding century: the lords had attracted Jews to bring life to their lands, and these towns formed a dense network along the Dniepr and the Boug. The uprising wiped out a large part of them.
