Une accusation de profanation d'hostie fut portée à Sternberg, dans le duché de Mecklembourg : un prêtre endetté aurait vendu des hosties consacrées à des Juifs de la ville, qui les auraient percées. Vingt-sept d'entre eux périrent sur le bûcher le vingt-quatre octobre, et la communauté fut chassée du duché, dont les Juifs restèrent exclus pendant près de trois siècles. Le lieu du supplice devint un pèlerinage et la chapelle qu'on y bâtit vécut du récit jusqu'à la Réforme. L'affaire est contemporaine de l'expulsion d'Espagne, la même année, à l'autre bout de l'Europe.
