the oldest community in Italy disappears

The Edict of Expulsion was enforced in Sicily, and the Jewish community of Palermo, the oldest in Italy, ceased to exist.

The island had had Jews without interruption since Antiquity, in almost all its cities, with Palermo as its center. Those who departed moved to Calabria, Apulia, Rome, and the Ottoman Empire; those who remained were forced to be baptized and were subsequently persecuted by the tribunal of the Inquisition. Sicily had no Jewish community again until the twentieth century.
