The community of Wetzlar, on the Lahn, was destroyed during the Black Death.

An imperial city of Hesse, it appears in the lists of communities annihilated between the Main and the Lahn.

The community lent money to merchants traveling up the Lahn and to the farmers of the Wetzlar countryside. The city, later the seat of the Empire's court of justice, readmitted Jews only sparingly and under paid letters of protection.
