In Nordhausen, in Thuringia, the Jews, knowing their fate was sealed, asked to build the pyre themselves; they mounted it dancing and singing.

The scene is recorded in German chronicles of the time, and it left a deeper mark on the memory of these massacres than many others. It belongs to what the Jewish tradition calls kiddouch ha-Chem, the sanctification of the Name: to die rather than accept baptism, as the Rhenish communities had done during the First Crusade.
