The community of Hameln, on the Weser, was destroyed during the Black Death.

The city is famous for the legend of the piper, whose earliest attestations date to roughly the same years; it is also, five centuries later, the city of Glückel de Hameln, whose memoirs are the greatest source on the life of the Jews of Germany in the Baroque age.
