The community of Halberstadt was destroyed during the Black Death.
Jews were subsequently recalled there, and Halberstadt became, in the modern era, one of the most important communities in northern Germany, with a large synagogue and a renowned yeshiva: it is one of the rare cases where the Jewish life of a city destroyed in thirteen forty-nine was fully reconstituted.
