the community destroyed
The community of Düren was destroyed during the Black Death.
It fell under the duchy of Jülich, whose counts extracted a levy from the Jews; the property of the dead reverted to the city and to the prince.
The city, situated between Aix-la-Chapelle and Cologne, was a place of fairs and pilgrimage; its Jewish community, an ancient one, was reconstituted only in the following century under revocable letters of residence.
