the community massacred

Gerolzhofen, a market town in Lower Franconia, saw its community massacred by the Armleder bands. Nearly all the localities struck that year belonged to the diocese of Würzburg.

Some of the imperial cities eventually organized themselves: several concluded a pact to suppress the bands and protect their Jews, not out of sympathy but because these troops threatened public order and commerce. It was this pact, and not any scruple, that brought the Armleder to a halt.
