The Jewish quarter of Magdeburg was attacked during a riot. The city, archiepiscopal and mercantile, had an ancient community whose status was governed by municipal law.

The law of Magdeburg, exported eastward, served as a model for hundreds of cities in Silesia, Poland, and Lithuania: it carried with it, beyond the urban charters, the articles concerning Jews. Part of the legal condition of Polish Jewry thus derives from a city on the Elbe.
