the community destroyed

Neustadt an der Aisch, a market town in Middle Franconia, saw its community destroyed during the Rintfleisch summer. It is recorded in the Nuremberg Memorbuch.

The accusation of host desecration that opened these massacres was new: it does not appear in the Empire until the end of the thirteenth century, following the doctrine of the real presence. For three centuries, it would provide the pretext for most of the destruction of communities in German lands — even more so than the accusation of ritual murder, which had come from England.
