The war between Henri III and the barons of Simon de Montfort made the Jewish communities of England a stake in the civil war. They were dependent on the king, their loans fed his treasury, and the registers in which those loans were recorded — the *archae* — were kept in the towns.
The barons' supporters attacked Worcester, Londres, Canterbury, Northampton, Winchester, Cambridge, and Lincoln in succession. Each time, the chests were forced open and the bonds of debt burned; pillage and murders followed. The attack on Londres took place during the Jewish Passover.
The destroyed records were never reconstituted, and the Crown, deprived of a portion of its revenue, turned to other expedients: prosecutions for coin-clipping, and then expulsion.
