Moers was one of the lower Rhine towns where the Jews of Cologne had been placed for safety. The Crusaders massacred the refugees there, but the lord of the place saved a few of them, whom the chronicles name.

These isolated rescues, attested at several points along the Rhineland, follow no policy: they depend on the decision of one man, often against the wishes of his people. The same chronicles that report them also note the lords who took the money and then handed over those they had received.
