Embroidered Direction Plaque (Mizrah) from Germany
Enrich the Great Bookמזרח רקום מגרמניה
Description
Household picture marking the eastern wall, toward which one turns to pray. In German Jewish homes the mizrah was often a lady's cross-stitch work: the word mizrah, verses, lions, stags and bouquets form a symmetrical scene on canvas. Framed, it adorned the main room as an object both pious and decorative.
