Engraved Copper Direction Plaque (Mizrah) from the Maghreb

Enrich the Great Book

מזרח חרוט על נחושת מהמגרב

Description

Picture marking the eastern wall of a North African Jewish home, toward which prayer is turned. Rather than the European papercut, Maghrebi usage often turns to engraved metal: on a copper or brass plate, the word mizrah, verses, a menorah, a hamsa and floral motifs are incised, sometimes heightened, in the regional ornamental repertoire.
