Illuminated confraternity pinkas (register) from Central Europe
Enrich the Great Bookפנקס
Description
The pinkas is the manuscript register of a community (kehilla) or confraternity (hevra), in which statutes, membership lists, deliberations, accounts, and the notable events of collective life were recorded. Both an administrative and a memorial document, it constitutes a primary historical source. Central European pinkasim frequently open with an illuminated title page and calligraphed lists, some featuring careful illuminations at the head of each section. Maintained sometimes over several centuries, they trace the internal organization, charity, conflicts, and Memory of Jewish communities, and stand as an essential testimony to their autonomy.
