Description
Central platform and desk of the Italian synagogue, called teva or bimah, from which the Torah is read. Often set at the center or facing the ark in the Italian bipolar layout, it is carved and gilded by baroque cabinetmakers, sometimes enclosed by a balustrade and topped with a canopy. The sloping, sometimes revolving desk receives the open scroll.
