Yemeni filigree etrog box

Enrich the Great Book

קופסת אתרוג

Description

This casket protected the citron (etrog), one of the four plant species (arba minim) ritually handled during the festival of Sukkot, a fruit whose perfect integrity is required and must therefore be preserved. The citron, joined with the lulav during the festival's blessings and processions, is a precious object that must be kept safe from damage. Fashioned in the silver filigree typical of Yemen, this casket is covered with the granulation and openwork twists that have made Yemeni Jewish silversmithing renowned. Both a ritual object and a precious case, it illustrates the application of Yemeni silversmithing expertise to the needs of Sukkot worship.
