Damask Silk Ark Curtain (Parokhet) from the Ottoman Empire
Enrich the Great Bookפרוכת משי דמשק מהאימפריה העות'מאנית
Description
In Sephardi communities of the Ottoman Empire, the ark curtain was often made from precious damask silks and brocades with Ottoman-inspired floral patterns. Rather than figurative embroidery, the ornament relies on the richness of the fabric itself, framed with metallic braid and completed by an applied Hebrew dedicatory inscription at the center.
