Parchment scroll on which a scribe (sofer) copies by hand the five books of the Pentateuch according to precise rules. It is rolled on one or two wooden axes called atzei hayim.
Significance
The most sacred object of Judaism, it is read publicly in the synagogue and constitutes the heart of communal worship.
