Embroidered bridal headdress (gargush) from Yemen
Enrich the Great Bookגרגוש
Description
The gargush is the headdress covering the head and neck of the Yemenite Jewish bride, a major element of her bridal adornment, particularly elaborate in the region of Sanaa. Laden with silver coins, beads, coral, and filigree, this enveloping headdress served an ornamental, social, and protective function, the abundance of coins warding off the evil eye. Its making combines embroidery, metalwork, and precious materials in a profusion that signaled the bride's status and the skill of Jewish goldsmiths. The gargush ranks among the most spectacular pieces of Yemenite Jewish women's costume.
