Embroidered Silk Ark Curtain (Parokhet) from Cochin, India
Enrich the Great Bookפרוכת משי רקומה מקוצ'ין שבהודו
Description
Ark curtain of the ancient Jewish communities of Cochin, on India's Malabar coast. Made from rich local silks and brocades embroidered with gold thread, it marries Indian floral motifs to a Hebrew dedicatory inscription. These fabrics, sometimes woven locally, attest to the ancient rootedness and splendor of the Kerala synagogues.
