Description
This large cup, placed at the center of the Seder table at Pessah, is dedicated to the prophet Elijah: filled with wine, it is symbolically reserved for him, and the door is opened to welcome him, in anticipation of the deliverance he is to announce. Larger than the individual cups, it is a focal point of the Passover ritual. Examples in cut Bohemian glass, a region renowned for its glassware, are engraved or cut with a scene of the Passover meal or with an inscription welcoming the prophet. This object illustrates the encounter between the Bohemian glass industry and the domestic liturgy of Pessah.
