Embroidered godfather's apron (sandak), Eastern Europe
סינר סנדק רקום, מזרח אירופה
Description
Protective apron worn by the sandak, who holds the child on his knees during the circumcision. Embroidered with floral motifs and covenant inscriptions, it shielded the festive garments and marked the honour conferred on the godfather. Kept from one ceremony to the next, it sometimes circulated within the brotherhood or the family.
