Eastern European portrait micrography panel

Enrich the Great Book

מיקרוגרפיה

Description

This panel belongs to the tradition of Hebrew micrography, an art consisting of composing a figurative image or pattern by means of lines of minute text, most often psalms or biblical passages. An ancient scribal tradition born of relative aniconism and reverence for the sacred text, it was cultivated by Jewish scribes and artists who thus drew portraits, views of holy places or ornamental compositions. In Eastern Europe in the nineteenth century, micrography was used to depict portraits of sages and Hasidic masters or idealized views of Jerusalem. The work combines calligraphic mastery with devotion, the sacred text itself becoming the very substance of the image.
