Silk Torah mantle (Me'il) from Salonica

Enrich the Great Book

מעיל תורה ממשי מסלוניקי

Description

In the great Sephardi community of Salonica, Torah scrolls were dressed in silk me'ilim embroidered in gold, donated by families in memory of the dead or in thanksgiving. The embroidery and dedications reflect a rich textile heritage now largely lost.
