Yemenite carved-stone wall Hanukkah lamp

A block of soft stone hollowed with eight wells and a place for the shamash, with a back incised with geometric motifs and rosettes. Made locally for want of precious metals, this rustic lamp burned the sesame oil of Yemenite communities. Its massive, low form rested on a window ledge or was fixed to the wall.
