Illuminated ketubah, Bukhara (Central Asia)
Enrich the Great Bookכתובה מעוטרת, בוכרה (מרכז אסיה)
Description
Marriage contract of the Bukharan Jews, decorated in the manner of Central Asian arts: rounded arches, stylized flowers and warm colours recalling ikat silks. The central Hebrew-Aramaic text sits in an architectural frame heightened with gold. These ketubot attest to a long-isolated community that preserved ancient formulas.
