Description

Hanukkah lamp with an openwork metal backplate, placed on the ground or hung in the synagogue for public lighting, distinct from domestic hanukkiot. The medieval bronze examples are among the oldest preserved.

Significance

It attests to the communal lighting of Hanukkah and to the formal evolution of the festival's lamps.
