Italian embroidered child's Torah mantle (for circumcision)
Enrich the Great Bookמעיל ספר תורה
Description
This small Torah mantle was donated to the synagogue in memory of a birth or circumcision, a custom linking the joyful family event to the service of the sanctuary. The mantle (meil) is the fabric cover that envelops the Torah scroll according to Italian and Ashkenazic usage, slipped over the upright scroll. Of small dimensions, these Italian devotional pieces were embroidered with silk and metallic thread, and often bore the child's name, the date of the event and motifs of blessing. The object illustrates the practice of votive gifts to the synagogue, which inscribed the moments of family life into communal Memory.
