Description
The shofar is a horn sounded according to a precise ritual, principally at Rosh Hashana and to conclude Yom Kippur, whose calls summon to self-examination and repentance; it also recalls the ram substituted for Isaac at the binding. The ram's horn is the most traditional. In the Maghreb, these shofars are sometimes engraved with motifs and inscriptions along the horn, a rare ornament, for the shofar must above all remain acoustically and ritually valid. The preparation of the horn (piercing, straightening by heat) represents a transmitted craft. This object is one of the oldest ritual instruments of Judaism.
