Carved wooden Sabbath cradle (vagn), Eastern Europe
עריסת שבת מעץ מגולף, מזרח אירופה
Description
Hanging or rocking cradle to which amulets and verses were sometimes tied to protect the infant. In the Eastern European tradition, rocking an empty cradle was avoided as a bad omen. The wood bore simple carved motifs; some families hung a kimpet sheet or a hamsa from it.
