Description
The Seder plate (ke'ara) arranges on the table the symbolic foods of the Passover meal: bitter herbs, charoset, a vegetable, a roasted bone, and a roasted egg, among others, laid out according to the ritual order of the Seder of Pessah. Such plates exist in both silver and ceramic. Central European faience examples, produced by the region's fine pottery workshops, often bear the names of the stages of the Seder painted in reserve around a central Passover scene, sometimes accompanied by verses from the Haggadah. Their decoration combines floral motifs and Hebrew inscriptions, in a dialogue between regional ceramics and the Jewish spring liturgy.
