Description
Rigid cylindrical case, of wood covered with repoussé metal or leather, that encloses the Torah scroll vertically in the Sephardic and Eastern rites. It opens like a book and allows reading without removing the parchment.
Significance
It distinguishes Eastern liturgical practice from the Ashkenazi use of the cloth mantle and sumptuously protects the sacred text.
