Silver Torah Shield (Tas) from the Ottoman Empire
Enrich the Great Bookטס תורה מכסף מהאימפריה העות'מאנית
Description
Pectoral shield hung by a chain on the Torah scroll's mantle, or fixed to the top of the Sephardi rigid case (tik). Ottoman silversmiths decorated it in repoussé with columns, arches and flowering vases framing a cartouche, sometimes fitted with a holder for a plaque naming the festival at which the scroll is read.
